Baseball has been know as a safe sport in regards to concussions but as we have seen with Ryan Church and Justin Morneau that is changing. Every sport needs to educate their coaches, parents and players as to the cause, effect and consequences. Not only is it important to be able to diagnose a concussion in baseball it is as important to manage one when it is detected.
Ryan Church experienced a concussion while sliding into the knee of the Braves shortstop. Despite the injury, Church was back in the line up only 10 days later; which later proved to be a very bad idea. He was later placed on the disabled list, and later lead to playing problems in the future.
Justin Morneau, one of Canada’s great baseball players also experienced a concussion, not just once, but twice. While trying to break up a double play against the Jays, Morneau suffered a concussion, which he knew he had to be cautious about from his previous experience five years before that being hit in the head with a ball and sidelined for 10 days.
Despite the thought that most people have that baseball is the safe sport, concussions can still occur. No matter what spot or what activity, concussions can happen. The only people that can stop them is you!
