Zenon Konopka, the Senators’ centre launched his new red and white wine, appropriately called ZK28, during The Hockey News’ annual NHL all-star weekend party at Metropolitan Brasserie. Made by the Palentine Hills Estate from Konopka’s hometown of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the wine was exclusively served at the party in the Byward Market.

As an athlete, an entrepreneur and benefactor, Zenon generously supports a variety of worthwhile causes and invites you to join him on his journey from the rink in his backyard to centre ice in the NHL and in doing so, raise awareness for head trauma and concussive injuries.

Sports Legacy Institute

SLI was founded on June 14, 2007 in Boston, Massachusetts by Christopher Nowinski and Dr. Robert Cantu in reaction to new medical research indicating brain trauma in sports had become a public health crisis. Post-mortem analysis of the brain tissue of former contact sports athletes was revealing that repetitive brain injuries, both concussions and non-concussive blows, could lead to a neurodegenerative disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. In addition, an absence of awareness and education on concussions, specifically proper diagnosis and management, was allowing the disease to proliferate. Finally, with brain trauma becoming the signature injury of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this research/education model could also be applied to the military.

SLI was founded to solve this concussion crisis in sports and the military through medical research, treatment, and education & prevention.  The initial vision of SLI was to formalize the groundbreaking neuropathological research and develop treatment and a cure through partnering with a top-tier university medical school. That vision was achieved when SLI partnered with Boston University School of Medicine in September, 2008, to form the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy. SLI would also develop ways to raise awareness of the issue and directly educate coaches, athletes and parents. As of 2012, SLI continues to achieve those goals through our Advanced Concussion Training and SLICE programs, the Chicago Concussion Coalition, and raising awareness through media like the New York Times, 60 Minutes, CNN, ESPN, and many others.

It’s what motivated us to start Battle Sports Science in 2009. Years before that though, we were hard at work in the sports safety business. Then and now, the goal remains the same, not just to make good products but to make innovative products that address the day’s greatest sports safety challenges.

The number of young lives touched by the effects of sports concussions continues to grow and grow in America. Fortunately, so too do the efforts to prevent and better treat head injuries.

King Devick Test

For more than 25 years, the King-Devick Test has been a proven indicator of oculomotor inefficiencies regarding eye movements during reading with hundreds of published papers in 19 different countries evaluating the test.
Published medical studies have determined that deficiencies in saccadic eye movements can be an indicator of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) or concussions.  Recent studies published in Neurology and the Journal of The Neurological Sciences have determined that post head-trauma related deficiency in the King-Devick Test is an indicator of mild TBI or concussions.
